Hurricanes In Haiti Sep 22
This is from a friend of ours’ blog, Laura about her journey teaching in Haiti.  They were hit by a Hurricane not long ago just before they were about to start their school year.  The following is a letter explaining their journey and their needs for the future.  If you care to leave her a message, or know of something that may benefit their journey, visit her blog at laurajeaninhaiti.blogspot.com  Thank you!
Dear Prayer Team,
I  wanted to share a recent update on the progress of our school, the Liberty Academy I  have a recent update on the progress of our school, the Liberty Academy, as well as a few prayer requests we would like to share with you. Due to the damage of Hurricane Hanna (the ever present mud and the roof being ripped off our school building), we have spent most of this last week restoring old supplies, trying to salvage what we can from our classrooms, and sorting out our curriculum that got thrown all together when the storm hit. Up to this point, wee have been working out of a back room on the base awaiting the final call on where school would actually be held.  Classes were supposed to start on Sept 8th, but the hurricane wiped away any chance of actually starting around that date. With no location to hold 6 classrooms (combined pre-K & K, 2nd, 3rd, combined 4th & 5th, middle and high school and ESL 1-5), we teachers have been discouraged and unmotivated in working towards our starting date. During our teacher’s meeting last week we found out that 4 of our classes will be held in the sanctuary (just outside the main building) and 2 classes in the back room of the base where we had been sorting out supplies. Illioney, our highschool teacher and school director, has been working himself to the point of exhaustion trying to iron out all the details and make arrangements for our school to function through these tough times. He has such a heart and vision for the Liberty Academy and wants the students to suffer as little as possible with this temporary setup. He made the call to start Sept 29th, next Monday, and we met again today to discuss the new situation.

We brought up a lot of concerns at the meeting and spent a good part of the time lifting up prayer requests that we felt were burdening our hearts as we tried to envision the school year starting. Our main concern at this point is the heat and lack of air flow in the sanctuary building…it is stifling in there, even with the windows opened. Three of us teachers went in the buidling the other day around 8am to sort through some boxes.  Before long, Shakinah was so drenched in sweat and feeling so overheated that she decided to leave the building and jump in the pool with her clothes on!  (Thankfully it is clean again).  Lindsay felt so hot she almost passed out and had to go lay down to keep herself from fainting. We do have plug-in fans, but they blow hot air, and in order to use the bathroom or get water (for teachers and students) you have to go outside and walk a ways in the mud to get across to the base facilities. Things are in progress for a walkway from the classrooms to the base, but even so, with the heat we’ll be working in, I can’t imagine two water breaks a day sufficing for the students. These are not ideal conditions for us to teach in, let alone for our students to stay focused and learn in.

All 6 of our teachers gathered today and prayed to the Lord for an air conditioning system.  This is something that has been in discussion for awhile, but has never been a priority on the base.  We will be holding classes in the hot sanctuary building at least until January of ’09 and while the AC would benefit our school as long as we’re there, it will will also be a blessing for all future services held in the building after we’re gone (including the DTS that will run for 5 months, beginning this January). We decided to believe in faith that the Lord would provide the system, the money for it, and the workers to install it. A good AC system for this particular building would cost between $3,500-5,000 and would take about two days to install. As we prayed for the AC funds to come in this morning, two teachers felt urged to give out of their personal support funds and donate $500 each. That’s a thousand dollars already knocked out!

There are other things we are in need of, but the AC is our biggest priority at this time.  have been looking into school uniforms for the students and even wrote a letter explaining our situation to a uniform company, trusting the Lord would put that letter in the right hands. We already have two bean bags for a reading corner (from my old 4th grade classroom at LAMS) and we are praying for a couch or two to be added as well. Most of our library books were destroyed in the flood so we are also praying for more donated books to go towards the library.

With all these things and more we believe as a whole that The Almighty God is working a “new thing” in Haiti this year and something is stirring in the hearts of the people. The flood caused a lot of damage, but it also opened doors to many desperate people crying out to God to help them. We want to grab hold of that desperate cry and give God the Glory as He reaches down and touches our lives amidst the devastation. We want to join in faith and believe the scripture: Ask and you will recieve!  Please join us in prayer as we petition our God for a miracle to take place and to literally breathe life into our new school.
In Him,
Laura J. Hess

Monday Monday Sep 22

Well, we got a LOT accomplished so far.

Kev and I headed out mid-morning and took the Jeep into Lebzelter’s for state inspection and to look it over.  Afterwards we headed to the apartment to load up my Dad’s truck for the things for salvation army.  That definitely took its toll on Kevin.  We decided to leave the rest of the stuff for this weekend and recruit some of our friends to help load stuff for the landfill and to take to our friend’s storage barn.  I was proud of how much he was able to do though-quite a workout!

Afterwards we did some grocery shopping and came home to kill some time.  This evening, I’ll head with my Mom to Rising Sun, Md to finally make the title transfer on the Saturn.  It will be so nice to finally have that done.  Then, Kevin will go to pick up the Jeep-needed some work for State Inspection, but nothing too major, so we’re satisfied with our purchase!

Our hope is to get everything done and get our fishing gear loaded into the jeep to take a beach day tomorrow!  In the next 30 minutes I’ll be heading to the Willow Valley Job fair, so wish me luck.

Pray that Dr. Thornton gets back to us soon so that Kevin can get some new meds for his continuing stomach issues.  I pray we can get a solution to this soon as it really deteriorates his quality of life.

I hope you’re all having a good Monday!

Feeding Issues Sep 21

Well, the feeding issues are still pretty unresolved.  I’ll definitely be making a call to Dr. Thornton tomorrow to see what the recommendation is.  We had to back down on the feeding from 125 to 115 because of Kevin’s severe stomach cramping.  If he is unable to go up on the feeding setting, that just means less time off of the pump, and more time carrying it around.  Not a huge deal, but it does limit his freedom so it would be nice to get it up a bit higher.  The stomach issues seem to be the only problem right now-everything else is settling in well and we’re enjoying our time together.

Tomorrow I’m heading to the Willow Valley for their job fair-I applied for a position as Dining Room Supervisor (for those who know me, this will be my 4th time going BACK to the WV-go figure!).  It’s not the most glamorous, but I’m hoping the hours will offer a bit of flexibility, and their benefits are very good, which is most important to us.  I also applied for a customer service position at Sight and Sound, which would be another great position to have.  I have a lot of other applications and resumes out, but these are probably my top two picks.  Pray the doors open so I can start a new job by early October!

Tomorrow we also plan to start going back to the gym very slowly.  Pray Kevin has the energy and doesn’t get frustrated by this. We are hoping this will be a good thing and will help his energy increase.

Wednesday we meet with the local oncologist to see if he’s willing to work with Dr. Thornton to get the chemo treatments here in Lancaster.  I am praying a home care company will agree to set it up right here in our home, but not many are willing to do it.  Hopefully something opens up so we don’t have to make weekly trips to get it done.

It’s going to be a busy week ahead, but we’re hoping to get to the beach for a day either on Tuesday or Thursday, and possibly again over the weekend depending how Kevin is feeling.  Lots to do, hoping it all works out.

God is providing amazing opportunities for us, and we were so blessed to just hear of a gentleman who had Angiosarcoma of the brain and is 7 years remission!!!  We are also talking with another girl who has Angiosarcoma in her heart and lungs and is responding well to different types of chemo.  We are praying we continue to meet Angiosarcoma survivors that are truly inspiring us.

Pushing on, praying for a good Sunday.  Leave some love!

We Have Arrived Sep 20

Well, not quite.  But we did get our Jeep today!  It was quite exciting to make this long awaited purchase.  Now we can focus on selling the Dodge Neon and minimizing our expenses.  We look forward to it and pray this Jeep will hold up well.  We got a great deal on it, it just needs a few things done to make it more reliable.

Today was pretty exhausting overall-we ran errands the whole day and we’re both completely wiped tonight and looking forward to some quiet.  Tomorrow should be a nice, relaxing day for us, as Monday is bound to kick us in the bum with all the errands and things we have planned to get done.  The list seems never-ending since we’ve been home.

Kevin had an “eh” day painwise-lots of GI issues that seem to be plagueing him.  Pray that they clear up and he can be comfortable.  He’s dealing very well with all he’s had to go through and his strenght truly amazes me.

Hello to all and have a wonderful, blessed weekend.

Ready for the Weekend! Sep 19

We’re so ready for the weekend.  It’s been a very quick week, surprisingly.  Getting adjusted to everything and fitted into our new home has certainly made the time fly!

Today we ran a bunch of errands, and this evening we went to look at a 99 Jeep Cherokee.  As I believe I’ve said before, we’d like to get rid of Kev’s Neon as well and get a used Cherokee to better suit our lifestyle.  We test drove it, and all things considered, it seems like a great fit.  We’re going to see it again in the morning, and will hopefully purchase it!  So, that means another vehicle to sell!  Oh well.  At least this one will be much cheaper in the long haul.

Kevin is doing ok-still having abdomenal pain, but overall doing well.  We’re going to try a higher feeding rate (125) tonight and are praying this goes well.  He’s adjusting well, and I think maybe even finally gaining a pound or two!

Monday looks to be a busy day-we have a lot to do, and hopefully we can get it all done.  Next week in general will be busy-visits, errands, appts and packing, moving and cleaning the apartment.  Pray we keep our heads together and Kevin’s health maintains to get us through the busy times ahead.

I hope you’re all adjusting well to the cooler weather.  It is definitely fall weather, and I’m so glad to see not FAIR weather.  You Lancaster locals know what I mean-crazy storms, intense heat, intense cold, lots of rain-it always seems to happen around fair season here in Central pa.  But this year looks nice and calm.

Kevin is very anxious for his foley bags to show up so he can finally risk trying new, more exciting foods. Without extra foleys, we can’t risk running out of the 3 we only have in stock.  He’s particularly craving a fried egg sandwich-go figure!

Have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll check in if I can.  If not, we go the jeep and are heading to the beach for the weekend!

…and again…thanks and blessings for all your prayers.  If you care to contact us while we’re living with my parents, you may write to us at:

Friday Fun Sep 19

Today so far is going well.  Kevin is still having issues with abdomen/stomach discomfort, but we believe a lot of it is related to the speed of his feedings.  Pray it eases so we can get him up to a rate where he can have more freedom from the bag!

Kev and I ran some errands this morning enjoying this absolutely BEAUTIFUL day here in Lancaster.  For those around the area, take a peak outside, open up the windows and enjoy determining what shapes the puffy clouds are.  Kev said he saw G.W.’s head in there somewhere!  Ha!

I keep dreaming of escaping overnight to the beach with Kev-I hope this happens sooner rather than later.  We’re ready to stick our feet in the sand and do some fishing.  I hope that opportunity comes our way quickly.

Thinking of you all today and wishin you all an absolutely WONDERFUL weekend!

Normal? NEVA! Sep 18

Dictionary.com’s Description of Normal: 1.conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; not abnormal; regular; natural.

So, this is the title of the post and why we’ll never be normal.  Frankly, none of us are normal.  I think we associate normal with habit.  We wake up, get ready, go to work/school, go home, eat, do our thing in the evening, sleep.  It’s a pretty NORMAL life.  But really it’s just a very habitual life.

We have new habits-like the drugs pushes, the feedings, the toting of some extra baggage.  But otherwise, we’re still very habitual creatures.  Just my thought of the day!

Today is going ok-Kevin is still having problems with the dry heaving.  Smells seem to set it off, and Lancaster County countryside certainly offers plenty of interesting ones to him.  Poor guy.

We’re awaiting my brother’s return home so we can get the DirecTv all set up.  We’re looking forward to watching regular TV again and getting caught up on all of our favorites on the fall lineup.

After that we’re heading to Lititz to visit my Grandma Harnish, then hopefully to PennCinema to FINALLY see Dark Knight, a movie we’ve been anticipating watching for some time.  It’ll hopefully be a good date day.

I hope everyone understands where I’m coming from with last night’s post.  Most times I do feel very optimistic about where the Lord is taking us in this journey through Angiosarcoma, and Kevin, above all, is remaining like a solid rock towards this disease.  He IS going to beat it is his motto.

However, like everyone dealing with life, we all have our down moments when things just feel crappy and you don’t quite know which end is up.  Last night, for whatever reason, was one of those nights.  I would say that for most of life, we’re optimistic, happy people.  We love our friends, family and God.  We enjoy each other’s company and companionship immensely.  We take pleasures out of the simple things in life, and overall feel blessed.  Life is good, despite what it may look like from the outside.

We’re excited about the journeys ahead.  I’m anxious to see what doors open for a newjob-I’m actually looking forward to going back to work, which for me, is amazing!  Ha.  It will be nice to re-connect with a more “normal (there’s that word again” world and make some money while doing it!

We’re hoping that we can trade in our Neon and get an older Jeep Cherokee to take to the beach, to the mountains and over the hills and through the woods to grandmother’s place we….well, you know the rhyme.  It will just be nice to rid ourselves of another car payment and have a different vehicle that suits more of our lifestyle.

We look forward to MEETING other Angiosarcoma survivors and connecting with the Sarcoma world through events and things.  I especially look forward to organizing a big event here in Central Pa to raise awarenss and money for Sarcoma Research.  I don’t know when/what/how, but it’s going to happen, and I can’t wait to meet all of our supporters.

We look forward to beating this cancer and pronouncing our Faith to the world through our journey.  God has given us a big outlet to talk to other’s about his Love and Assurance.  Without our Faith, and without your love and support, I know for certain we couldn’t handle this.

I look forward to pushing forward with the book about our story.  I have no clue how to go about publishing a book, but I’m sure when it’s close to finality, I’ll figure out a way to get our story even more out there!  Frankly, I’ll just be so happy to finally have finished a book I started!  I’ve probably started about 10, and never get anywhere!

We look forward to travelling all over the country to new places.  We have some friends in Seattle and San Francisco that have offered up their homes for places to stay whenever we go, and we’re definitely looking forward to that.  We can’t wait to finally visit NC beaches together and go surf fishing-maybe even this Fall!

We look forward to continue embracing our days together.  To try and forget about the circumstances that surround us, and LIVE IN THE PRESENT.  Trusting God for our future, and making the most of these moments.

We look forward to continuing to build our life together.  Whether here or there, but always together.  We can’t wait to continue this journey, and are embracing every possible moment together.

Thank you for helping us continue this journey!
